{"id":3456,"date":"2025-07-16T17:16:07","date_gmt":"2025-07-16T17:16:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tidolore.ch\/cancer-related-pain\/"},"modified":"2026-03-17T17:53:23","modified_gmt":"2026-03-17T17:53:23","slug":"cancer-related-pain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tidolore.ch\/en\/cancer-related-pain\/","title":{"rendered":"Cancer-related pain"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Even with a difficult diagnosis, no one should have to live with unnecessary pain.<\/em><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is it?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Cancer-related pain is pain that can occur at any stage of cancer, including:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The initial stages of diagnosis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Treatments (surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The advanced stages<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Or even after recovery, as residual chronic pain<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Or even after recovery, as residual chronic pain<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/tidolore.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/dreamstime_m_164117305-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2004\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tidolore.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/dreamstime_m_164117305-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tidolore.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/dreamstime_m_164117305-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tidolore.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/dreamstime_m_164117305-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/tidolore.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/dreamstime_m_164117305-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/tidolore.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/dreamstime_m_164117305-2048x1152.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How often does it occur?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>According to scientific evidence:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Approximately 30\u201350% of cancer patients experience pain during their illness.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In advanced stages, the percentage can rise to 80%.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In many cases, pain can be effectively controlled if treated by a specialist.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When do we intervene?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Uncontrolled cancer pain can have a significant impact on quality of life.<br\/>Early intervention by a pain therapist is helpful when:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The pain does not respond to traditional medications.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You want to reduce the dosage of opioids to limit their side effects.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The pain is neuropathic or complicated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are unacceptable side effects (sedation, constipation, nausea, confusion).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What treatments are available?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Drug treatment<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Anti-nociceptive drugs: paracetamol, NSAIDs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Opioids<\/strong> in calibrated doses (morphine, oxycodone, fentanyl, tapentadol)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Medications for <strong>neuropathic pain<\/strong>: gabapentin, pregabalin, duloxetine, amitriptyline<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Co-therapies: corticosteroids, antidepressants, anticonvulsants<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Minimally Invasive Interventional Techniques<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>In selected cases:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ultrasound-guided or <strong><strong><strong>fluoroscopy<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>-guided nerve blocks<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pulsed or thermal radiofrequency<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Neurolytic blocks<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Catheters for continuous spinal infusion (epidural or intrathecal)<\/strong> in refractory cases<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Other Integrated Approaches<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/tidolore.ch\/en\/transcutaneous-electrical-nerve-stimulation\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1851\">TENS<\/a><\/strong> and analgesic electrical stimulation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Psychological support and cognitive-behavioral therapy<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Integrated palliative care<\/strong>, in collaboration with the oncologist<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Treatment Objectives<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reduce pain to a <strong>tolerable<\/strong> level<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maintain maximum <strong>functionality and mental clarity<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid or limit <strong>medication side effects<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Improve quality of life<\/strong>, at every stage of the illness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Even with a difficult diagnosis, no one should have to live with unnecessary pain.
