These roots exit the spine through small openings that can narrow with age or for other reasons. Epidural infiltration can also be helpful in other situations, such as persistent pain after a herpes zoster infection (shingles), especially if the treatment is performed within the first three months after the onset of symptoms.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Epidural infiltration is a targeted treatment to reduce inflammation and pain in these situations.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is an Epidural Infiltration?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>It is an injection into the epidural space (near the spinal nerves) that combines:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Local anesthetic: to see immediately if the pain is reduced, and to better understand where the pain is coming from (diagnostic test)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cortisone<\/strong>: to decrease inflammation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Before the Procedure: What to Know<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Inform your pain specialist if:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You have a fever or feel unwell<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You have allergies to medications, local anesthetics, or contrast agents<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are taking anticoagulant medications (they may need to be suspended)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are pregnant (the procedure uses X-rays and will be postponed)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to Prepare<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You can take your usual medications, unless otherwise instructed regarding anticoagulants.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is an outpatient procedure: hospitalization is not required.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You will not be able to drive after the procedure: arrange for someone to accompany you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How is the Procedure Performed?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You will lie face down on an examination table.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The skin is disinfected and prepared in a sterile manner.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The skin is anesthetized with a local anesthetic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The doctor inserts a thin needle into the epidural space, guided by X-ray.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A small amount of contrast medium is used to confirm the correct position.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The anesthetic and cortisone are injected.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>Duration:<\/strong> about 15 minutes.<br\/>After a short rest, you can return home (with an escort).<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Happens Afterwards?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Immediately after, you might feel an improvement thanks to the anesthetic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It&#8217;s normal to feel some numbness or a sensation of heaviness in the legs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the first few days, there may be a slight temporary worsening of symptoms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The full effect of the cortisone begins after about <strong>10-14 days<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>In most cases, only one day of rest is needed after a minimally invasive procedure.<\/p>\n\n<p>We will ask you to fill out a simple form to evaluate the effectiveness of the procedure.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How Long Do the Benefits Last?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>It depends on the cause of the pain:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In some cases, a single infiltration provides lasting relief.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In others, it may be necessary to repeat the treatment or consider other therapies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Are there Risks or Side Effects?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>The procedure is generally safe. Possible side effects include: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Slight pain or discomfort at the injection site<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Temporary feeling of numbness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rarely infection, allergic reaction, bleeding, or nerve damage (injury to a nerve)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Temporary effects of cortisone (flushing, sweating, palpitations)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In diabetics, possible temporary increase in blood sugar<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Serious complications are very rare.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Remember:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do not drive for <strong>24 hours<\/strong> after the procedure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Arrange for someone to accompany you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fill out the form carefully and return it to your pain doctor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Why Am I Being Offered this Procedure?
