CAPSAICIN 8%

Capsaicin is a natural substance derived from chili peppers, known for its ability to influence pain receptors in the skin.

In medicine, it is used in the form of a high-concentration patch (8%) (Qutenza®), to treat peripheral neuropathic pain, which is a type of pain caused by a nerve problem.

This pain can manifest as:

  • burning or stinging,
  • tingling,
  • hypersensitivity to touch,
  • continuous or intermittent pain in the same area of the skin

It is a non-invasive treatment, localized and without systemic effects.

In which Cases is it Used?

Qutenza is indicated for adults suffering from:

  • Painful peripheral neuropathy (e.g., post-chemotherapy, post-herpetic, diabetic, post-surgical),
  • Localized neuropathic pain that does not respond well to traditional medications or for those who have intolerance to medication side effects.

How Does it Work?

Capsaicin acts directly on the pain receptors (TRPV1) present in the nerve endings of the skin. Qutenza temporarily “turns off” these receptors, reducing pain sensitivity in the treated area.

The treatment does not eliminate the nerves, but “desensitizes” them for weeks or months.

How is the treatment carried out?

  • The patch is applied by specialized medical personnel directly to the painful area.
  • The application duration is 30 or 60 minutes, depending on the location.
  • After treatment, the area may appear red or sensitive, but this usually passes in a few days.
  • Sedation is generally not necessary.

The patient remains awake and can return home immediately after.

How Long Does the Effect Last?

  • In many patients, pain relief begins within 1-2 weeks.
  • The effect can last from 2 to 3 months, sometimes longer.
  • The treatment can be repeated every 90 days, if necessary.

Advantages

  • Does not require daily medication intake
  • Few systemic side effects
  • Targeted and localized treatment
  • Improves quality of life in many patients with resistant pain

Possible Side Effects

  • Temporary burning or heat sensation in the treated area
  • Redness or swelling of the skin
  • Local irritation (usually mild and temporary)

In general, Qutenza is well-tolerated and does not interfere with other medications.

Lifestyle Interventions

Attività fisica (passeggiate, stretching), sonno regolare, alimentazione equilibrata e tecniche di riduzione dello stress possono migliorare la resilienza e potenziare l’efficacia delle terapie mediche.

Psychological Support

The management of chronic pain can be aided by psychological interventions (such as relaxation techniques or cognitive behavioral therapy), which help reduce anxiety, insomnia, and the impact of pain on quality of life.
